what your favorite designer says about you: editorial design

goals

To create a two-spread publication and a cover design based on an influential graphic designer from history, including an original feature article focused on a personal viewpoint. I chose April Greiman because our styles are very different, but she inspires me to be braver with my design choices.

process

I started by researching Greiman’s style, which includes layering, bright color, various contrasting typefaces, and a lot of digital elements. The article is written as an opinion piece; my perspective on her contributions to the world of design and how her work has inspired me. The spreads are focused specifically on emulating 80s new wave, but the cover is a more contemporary interpretation, to better fit in with Wired’s typical cover treatment.

results

I found it rewarding to broaden my horizons by working in a style I wasn’t used to. The design also received a Silver AAF Award in the regional student division.
