April Greiman Article:

“What Your Favorite Designer Says About You”

Challenge

Create a two-spread publication and a cover design based on an influential graphic designer from history. Include an original feature article focused on a personal viewpoint.

Process

I chose April Greiman as my designer because our styles are very different, but she inspires me to be braver with my design choices. I designed both spreads based on her style, including layering, bright color, various contrasting typefaces, and a lot of digital elements.

I decided to make the cover for Wired magazine, since this article is something that would fit in well with their usual content.

While it was a challenge to create work so different from my usual style, I found it rewarding and enjoyable to broaden my horizons and get out of my comfort zone. I also enjoyed writing my own article, and doing that helped inspire my designs as well.

Results

The final result of the project is a Wired cover design and two spreads that not only feature April Greiman’s signature 80s new wave style, but also give it a fresh, more contemporary look to bring it into the modern day. The design also received a silver AAF award in the regional student division.
